Specimen Requirements

Preferred Specimen

Sodium fluoride/potassium oxalate (gray top) tube

Minimum Volume

0.5 mL plasma or serum

Sample Stability

After separation from cells:
1 week room temperature
2 weeks refrigerated
3 years frozen

Transport Temperature

Refrigerated

Collection Instructions

1 mL sodium fluoride/potassium oxalate plasma. Centrifuge sample and separate plasma from cells within 2 hours of collection. Transfer 1 mL plasma to a plastic transport tube. Clearly label tube as sodium fluoride plasma. Refrigerate.
Note: this test is for medical purposes only. It is not valid for forensic use.

Alternative Specimen

1 mL serum from a plain red top tube. Allow sample to clot in an upright position for at least 60 minutes, then centrifuge sample and transfer 1 mL serum to a plastic transport tube within 2 hours of collection. Clearly label tube as serum from a plain red top tube. Refrigerate.

1 mL EDTA (lavender top) or sodium heparin (green top) plasma. Centrifuge sample and separate plasma from cells within 2 hours of collection. Transfer plasma to a plastic transport tube. Clearly label tube as EDTA or sodium heparin plasma. Refrigerate.
