Test Details

Alternative Name(s)

N/A

Test Includes

Selenium

Methodology

Inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP/MS)

Rejection Criteria

Samples collected in serum separator tube
Serum or plasma not separated from the cells within 2 hours of collection.
Samples submitted in non-trace metal-free tubes

Reference Range(s)

23.0-190.0 UG/L

Specimen Requirements

Preferred Specimen

Trace metal (royal blue top) tube

Minimum Volume

0.5 mL serum or plasma

Sample Stability

If the sample has been collected and stored in the appropriate container, the trace element values do not change with time.

Transport Temperature

Room temperature

Collection Instructions

2 mL serum from a royal blue trace metal-free tube without
additive. Allow tube to clot for at least 60 minutes, then
centrifuge sample and separate serum from cells within
2 hours of collection. Transfer 2 mL serum to a plastic
transport tube. Clearly label tube as serum from a royal
blue top tube. Room temperature.

Diet, medication, and nutritional supplements may introduce
interfering substances. Patient should be encouraged to
discontinue nutritional supplements, vitamins, minerals,
and non-essential over-the-counter medications (upon the
advice of their physician).

Alternative Specimen

2 mL plasma from a trace metal-free EDTA tube. Centrifuge sample and separate plasma from cells within 2 hours of collection. Transfer plasma to a trace metal-free transport tube. Clearly label tube as EDTA plasma from a royal blue top tube. Room temperature.
