Specimens should be handled as infectious using safe laboratory procedures such as those outlined in CDC guidelines.
Nasopharyngeal (NP) – Use the red top amies collection tube provided by the laboratory, remove the sterile swab and instruct the patient to look straight ahead and tilt their head back slightly. Insert the swab into the nostril, parallel to the palate, and advance to the nasopharynx’s posterior wall. Gently rotate the swab for 5 seconds and withdraw slowly. Place the swab in the sample tube. Snap the swab at the designated break point and dispose of the broken end. Recap the tube.
Oropharyngeal (OP) – Using the white top amies media collection tube provided by the laboratory, remove the sterile swab and instruct the patient to tilt their head backwards, open their mouth, and stick out their tongue. Without touching the side of the mouth, use the sterile swab to swab the posterior nasopharynx and the tonsillar arches. Place the swab in the sample tube. Snap the swab at the designated break point and dispose of the broken end. Recap the tube.
